YouMissed, Manchester

January 2010

After sleeping in most of the day following a night of drinking and telling stories at Nckt’s, we eventually left the flat in the middle of the afternoon. YouMissed was the destination, a sizeable concrete box culvert that goes for a few hundred metres under the city. Compared to normal conditions, the rain of the night before had caused it to shit itself, in drain speak. We stepped into the flow and walked over the weir, carefully navigating our way past the gushing waters which threatened to push us over.

Probably the most sizable concrete box that I’ve been in, YouMissed was amusing mainly for the J-Bizzle related grafitti that was littered in part of it. I wanted to ride my inflatable boat down the channel, but perhaps that’s something for the next trip. We made our way down to the outfall for The Works but the waters were similarly high and we wouldn’t have made it in without a breach. Time was pressing so we returned to the city and hopped up to Tempus Tower for a few views of the city before I left for the south again.

Manchester has a lot to offer and I’m looking forwards to returning. Thanks to Nckt and Jim Gilette for the tours!

  1. Again, apologies we showed you only Manchester’s most basic drain, as all the brickery was impossible due to the weather. Come back soon, and hopefully you’ll get a proper tour!
