Bromley-by-Bow

with one comment

The loops created by the river and road network winding through the industrial areas in East London separate small swatches of land almost equally shared by run down warehouses and disused land, light industrial space and new construction, eagarly cracking on for the forthcoming Olympics. Sat on a patch between some new-build apartments and the A11 is the St Andrews development. Read the rest of this entry »

Boat Party

Much to Otter‘s chagrin, ‘Verticality‘ has entered the vernacular of the current London ‘UE’ Set. Discussed at length on Placehacking, where Brad first coined the concept, it sits alongside ‘Edgework‘ and the much derided ‘Prohobo‘ as a term that wouldn’t neccesarily mean a lot to anybody else, but is in somewhat regular usage among this group of individuals. Brad:Pad: LCC’s London Squat.

February – May 2011

When Brad left London in February 2011 he left behind a set of keys and a note. The keys were for his flat in Clapham and the note said to enjoy ourselves. We ended up with almost 4 months of this London base, and enjoy it we did. Read the rest of this entry »

IOD BBQ

July 2011

“Are you from one of those groups?” the police officer asked me. “You know, Anarchy?”. Quite evidently, he didn’t have a clue what 8 of us were doing on a rooftop with a barbecue, but his perception of our intentions was grossly wide of the mark.

IYLO – “Inspiration for life”

July 2011

Another night, another trip into the skies. It’s quieter out there, no people, just a feeling of serenity. Whether it’s 80 stories or 17, being ‘up’ is rewarding. Read the rest of this entry »

June 2011

Talk of climbing stuff had been getting louder over the last few weeks and a set of floodlights was made a target. Nowhere in particular, just a classic floodlight pylon, a metal frame with a ladder and a row of shining lights at the top. The advent of modern stadia has diminished this provincial staple and I feel it’s not going to be too long before these die out, a relic from the early 20th century and the boom years of football. Bevis Mark

March 2011

The City of London is a happy hunting ground for the ascension inclined amongst the community. Bevis Mark is undergoing ‘improvements’ in the same way that Kings Reach Tower was, and at just 9 stories, would probably be left aside if it wasn’t immediately adjacent to 30 St Mary’s Axe, AKA ‘The Gherkin’. December 2010

Some nights you just have to travel together to a disused conference centre, play some tunes and drink beers, then sleep in a part built hotel nearby that ran out of funds after completing no more than 4 rooms, but still hadn’t turned off the electricity . Then tip-toe 9 strong around a disused art deco hospital before being chased out by a secca. Participate in the Urbania.

Battersea Powerstation – Dec 2009

You can’t ignore it from the Chelsea Embankment. A brooding brick hulk decaying since the 1980s.

For the last 25 years schemes have been put forward to develop the site into something else, as the site switches owners: Theme Parks, leisure facilities, ‘affordable’ housing, you name it, they’ve dreamed it.
