The Winchester

Covered in soot and tube dust I emerged elated from City Road tube station, my companion Danny following me out into the cool and quiet London night. The past two hours had been a nervy affair, our first deep level tube line and abandoned station. The site was scoped out a few days prior, the night we returned we were fully prepared and were soon in the tunnels beneath.

A train rumbled past, commuters sat reading the paper or looking out the window into the darkness of the deep level tube line, waiting for the next 540 metres to pass before the next real station. We could see them so clearly, our faces blackened with the oily dust of just over 100 years worth of locomotives hiding us in the shadows.

In the twenties, the line was expanded, with various stations along the line enlarged. This one wasn’t, as usage was insufficient to justify it. Unfortunately, the platforms were eaten by this expansion, although the site was used as a deep level shelter, inexplicably opened following the worst of the blitz.
